Biopesticides: The Next Agri-Revolution

With global markets booming and regulators tightening, biopesticides emerge as game-changers in agrochemicals. What does it mean for farmers, exporters and the planet?

,In recent years, biologicals-particularly biopesticides-have surged ahead as the fastest-growing segment in agrochemicals. A Kline + Company report spanning 22 countries valued the market at US$4billion in 2024, with sustained double-digit year-on-year growth. As concerns mount over declining bee populations, input costs, and environmental safety, growers and policymakers are seeking sustainable alternatives to traditional chemical pesticides.

Market Drivers & Regulatory Dynamics

The United States, Brazil, and China dominate current biopesticide usage, thanks in part to robust R&D investment, farmer outreach, and-especially in China-government incentives such as tax breaks. Brazil stands out with its revamped pesticide rules: as of 2023, the registration process for biological inputs now takes around 12 months, compared with 3-6 years in the EU, resulting in 106 new registrations in 2024 alone.

Elsewhere in Latin America, Colombia and Peru have aligned with EU standards to support export-oriented, high-margin crops. Their combined regulatory timelines of 12-18 months (Colombia) and ~12 months (Peru) have yielded nearly 600 approved biological pesticide products in Peru.

In the European Union, implementation of the EU Green Deal mandates a 50% reduction in chemical pesticide use and 25% organic farmland by 2030 under CAP frameworks. However, EU approvals remain complex-averaging 2.5-3.5 years, potentially stretching up to 6 years-with each active ingredient reviewed at both EU and member-state levels.

Turkey, strategically located between Europe and Asia, follows suit with timelines of 12-24 months, depending on dossier intricacy.

High-Margin Crops & Competitive Landscape

Biopesticides typically find use in high-value crops-fruits, vegetables, and specialty grains-where precision agriculture meets sustainable agriculture demands. Major agrochemical players are making significant moves: Syngenta, Corteva, Mitsui, and others are merging, acquiring, and partnering to strengthen their biocontrol portfolios.

Barriers to Wider Adoption

Barriers to Wider Adoption

Despite momentum, challenges persist: economic volatility, inflation, and currency instability in emerging economies; high biopesticide costs and logistical constraints; conservative farmer mindsets; and intricate regulatory compliance. The Ukraine conflict has exacerbated the situation, inflating fertilizer prices and skewing farmer priorities.

Outlook: Growth, Sustainability & Agri-Tech

Still, industry forecasts anticipate a doubling of biopesticide sales in seven key countries over the next five years. Enhanced farmer awareness, carbon sequestration imperatives, and agritech innovation-including data-driven trial design and integrated digital tools-are expected to support this upward trajectory.
