China's New Nematode Technology Could Reshape the Global Crop Protection Market
China approved its first microencapsulated fluopyram formulations, a breakthrough that could redefine nematode control and influence global crop protection.
China approved on July 23, 2026, the country's first microencapsulated formulations combining fluopyram and abamectin to control root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) in tomato and cucumber production. The registrations mark the first time fluopyram has been commercialized in a microcapsule suspension (ZC) formulation for nematode management. The development is significant not only for China's crop protection industry but also for global agriculture, where growers continue to seek more effective, longer-lasting, and environmentally responsible solutions to combat one of the most damaging soilborne pests affecting high-value crops.
The newly registered products include 7% abamectin + fluopyram for cucumbers and 15% abamectin + fluopyram for tomatoes, both using microencapsulation technology designed to improve product performance under field conditions. Unlike conventional suspension concentrates, microcapsules gradually release the active ingredients, increasing residual activity while protecting them from rapid degradation caused by sunlight and environmental exposure. Industry experts believe this formulation technology could reduce application frequency, improve field consistency, and lower production costs by extending the effective control period against root-knot nematodes.
Fluopyram is recognized as one of the few low-toxicity nematicides with a unique mode of action targeting mitochondrial Complex II, making it a valuable tool for integrated nematode management programs. Because it differs from traditional nematicides, fluopyram plays an important role in resistance management strategies, allowing growers to rotate chemistries and preserve long-term efficacy. China currently has 24 registered fluopyram-abamectin combination products, with most marketed as suspension concentrates (SC).
