The findings come from a new study prepared by AgbioInvestor for CropLife International, released on July 16, 2026. The report is particularly significant as global agriculture faces mounting pressure to increase food production while simultaneously addressing climate change, pest resistance, biodiversity conservation, and increasingly demanding environmental and food safety standards.

According to the report, the discovery phase alone required an average investment of US$133 million between 2020 and 2023, with research chemistry representing the single largest expenditure.

According to the report, Central and South America represented 17% of regionalized development and stewardship spending in 2023, equivalent to approximately US$52 million. These investments support local adaptation programs, field validation studies and stewardship initiatives designed to maximize technology performance under regional farming conditions.

For countries such as Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, ensuring timely access to innovative crop protection technologies will be crucial to maintaining competitiveness in global agricultural markets, particularly as international buyers demand greater levels of sustainability, traceability and lower carbon footprints.

Biological Solutions Are Gaining Momentum

While conventional technologies still account for the majority of industry investment, the study also found increasing diversification in research portfolios. Biological products expanded their share of total R&D expenditures from 7% in 2019 to 10% in 2023, reflecting growing interest in complementary solutions for sustainable crop management. However, the report warns that innovation only delivers value when farmers can access new technologies efficiently. Lengthy, unpredictable or non-science-based regulatory systems can delay the introduction of new solutions, limiting farmers' ability to address emerging agronomic challenges.

The study concludes that maintaining science-based, transparent and predictable regulatory frameworks will be essential to balancing rigorous safety assessments with the urgent need to accelerate agricultural innovation. As the world faces increasingly complex production challenges, continued investment in crop protection innovation, agricultural technology, sustainable farming solutions and food security initiatives will remain fundamental to supporting resilient and productive agricultural systems worldwide.
