Fertilizer markets continued their upward momentum in mid-September, with phosphorus fertilizers leading the way. According to the latest DTN Retail Fertilizer Trends, DAP averaged $904/ton, a 7% increase over the previous month and the highest price since December 2022. At the same time, MAP surged to $921/ton, marking the first time both fertilizers have been priced above $900 since late 2022.

Other fertilizers also recorded modest increases. Potash rose to $486/ton, anhydrous ammonia to $777/ton, and UAN28 to $420/ton. Meanwhile, urea dropped slightly to $619/ton, along with 10-34-0 at $667/ton and UAN32 at $474/ton.

On a cost-per-pound of nitrogen basis, urea averaged $0.67/lb.N, anhydrous $0.47/lb.N, UAN28 $0.75/lb.N and UAN32 $0.74/lb.N.

Industry experts recommend soil testing as a cost-saving strategy, particularly where phosphorus levels may already be high. According to Jeff Vetsch from the University of Minnesota Extension, many southern Minnesota fields exceed 20 ppm in phosphorus, suggesting that reducing or skipping DAP or MAP applications may be economically sound.

Compared to a year ago, all eight tracked fertilizers are now more expensive. DAP is up 22%, MAP 13%, urea 28%, anhydrous 14%, 10-34-0 12%, UAN28 31%, UAN32 35%, and potash 6%.
