Michigan has officially confirmed its first case of tar spot in the 2026 growing season, with the foliar disease detected on July 13 in Jackson County, according to the Crop Protection Network. The development comes at a critical time as the state's corn crop rapidly approaches pollination under warm weather conditions. The confirmation is important because tar spot has become one of the most economically damaging corn diseases in the Midwest, capable of significantly reducing yields and increasing fungicide costs if favorable weather conditions allow the disease to spread during reproductive stages.
The latest detection adds to a growing regional concern. Tar spot has now been reported in at least nine states this year, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin. Since first appearing in Michigan in 2016, the disease has established a history in 55 of the state's 83 counties, demonstrating its ability to persist and expand under suitable environmental conditions. USDA's latest Crop Progress report highlights the strong condition of Michigan's corn crop despite emerging disease concerns. As of the week ending July 12, approximately 17% of the state's corn had reached the silking stage, which is four percentage points ahead of the five-year average and only slightly behind last year's pace. Faster crop development has improved expectations for timely maturity, although additional rainfall will remain critical as temperatures continue to rise across much of the state.
The USDA's condition ratings indicate that Michigan's corn crop remains in solid shape entering the second half of July. A combined 72% of the crop is currently rated good to excellent, suggesting strong yield potential if weather conditions remain supportive and disease pressure remains manageable.
