The rapid spread matters because Nebraska is one of the nation's leading corn-producing states, and the disease is emerging just as fields begin transitioning into reproductive growth stages, when infections can have the greatest impact on grain yields and farm profitability.
The number of affected counties has climbed from just eight three weeks ago to 29 today, while 60 of Nebraska's 93 counties have now recorded tar spot at least once since 2021. Confirmed infections have also been reported this season in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana, highlighting that the disease continues expanding throughout the Corn Belt. Although current infections remain relatively mild, agronomists caution that disease pressure can intensify rapidly if humid weather persists during pollination and grain fill. For producers, this creates new uncertainty around fungicide investments, crop protection strategies, and overall input costs during one of the most economically sensitive periods of the growing season.
Weather Conditions Are Favoring Further Disease Expansion
According to agronomist, Nebraska's unusually high number of reported cases reflects both increased grower awareness and environmental conditions that have favored disease development early in the season. Because tar spot remains relatively new to Nebraska, producers and crop advisers continue submitting large numbers of samples for laboratory confirmation, unlike states where the disease has become routine after more than a decade of recurring outbreaks. At the same time, persistent humidity and favorable moisture conditions have created an ideal environment for fungal development without yet producing severe plant damage.
Kappler emphasized that most current infections remain limited to isolated lesions rather than widespread canopy destruction. However, he warned that the situation deserves close monitoring as corn approaches tasseling and reproductive growth. During vegetative stages, corn plants possess greater natural tolerance to infection, but disease pressure after tasseling can significantly reduce photosynthetic capacity, shorten grain fill, and ultimately lower yields. Researchers are also watching how far west the disease may advance, with confirmed cases already reaching Custer, Phelps, and Franklin counties, farther west than typically observed this early in the season.
Agronomists recommend that growers intensify field scouting immediately. Tar spot appears as small black raised spots, known as stromata, that cannot be rubbed off the leaf surface and may develop on both sides of corn leaves. Suspected samples can be submitted to the University of Nebraska Plant Diagnostic Laboratory for confirmation. Researchers also warn that irrigated corn faces a higher risk of yield loss, since overhead irrigation extends leaf wetness, creating conditions that accelerate disease development and spread.
Fungicide timing will become one of the most important management decisions during the coming weeks. Iowa State University Extension plant pathologist Alison Robertson continues recommending applications between VT (tasseling) and R3 (milk stage), a window consistently shown by research to provide the greatest protection against tar spot and other foliar diseases. Proper timing is increasingly important as growers balance disease risk against rising fungicide prices, labor availability, and volatile commodity markets.
Despite growing disease concerns, Nebraska's latest USDA Crop Progress report indicates that the crop remains in relatively strong shape. Ten percent of the state's corn had reached the silking stage by July 5, slightly ahead of both last year and the five-year average, while no fields had yet entered the dough stage, which remains typical for early July. Overall crop ratings continue to suggest that Nebraska enters the reproductive season with solid yield potential, although disease pressure during the next several weeks could become a determining factor.
