n an industry where security, loyalty, and instinct can make or break a day, Sirius has proven himself indispensable. Owned by Jorge and Debbie Garcia-Bengochea, members of the Florida Farm Bureau, the six-year-old Maremma sheepdog is entrusted with the protection of miniature therapy horses. These horses serve vulnerable populations, offering comfort to children and adults in hospitals, veterans coping with trauma, and residents of hospice or assisted living programs.

"Guardian dogs are like having a 24-7 security system on the farm," Jorge remarked. "I feel great about the farm being safe, and very proud of what Sirius is doing to protect the horses."

Sirius was chosen from over 100 nominees in a competitive selection process judged by experts in pet care, veterinary science, and communication. Criteria included the dog's contributions to the farm, playfulness, and overall impact on farm life.

A Win for All Working Dogs

The contest, now in its seventh year, is a highlight of the AFBF's national convention. It celebrates the wide range of jobs performed by farm dogs, from rounding up livestock and chasing off predators to opening gates and greeting visitors. Beyond their tasks, these dogs provide emotional support for families navigating the challenges of modern farming.

"Farming is very rewarding but stressful at times," said AFBF President Zippy Duvall. "Farm dogs can help ease the burden."

Purina, the contest's sponsor, awarded Sirius with $5,000 in prize money, a trophy plate, a year's supply of Pro Plan dog food, and other pet care products. Jack Scott, Vice President of Sustainable Sourcing at Nestlé Purina PetCare, emphasized the company's continued support: "These remarkable dogs play a crucial part in supporting farm operations."

People's Choice Pup: Daisy the Rescuer

In addition to Sirius, the Farm Dog of the Year program included a public vote for the People's Choice Pup award. That title went to Daisy, a rescue dog from Kentucky owned by Shelby and Lora Ennis. Daisy earned national attention when she barked for help after Lora suffered a fall at home, effectively saving her owner's life.

Daisy received a $2,500 cash prize, a trophy plate, and Purina products. Other finalists in the category included Rosie (PA), Paisley (AZ), River (NC), and Boone (IA), reflecting the diversity of dog breeds and roles on American farms.

Charity and Canine Training

This year's contest also introduced a charitable donation in honor of the winning dogs. AFBF contributed $1,500 to P.H.A.R.M. Dog USA, a nonprofit organization that trains and places service dogs with farmers living with physical or cognitive disabilities. This effort underscores the broader impact of farm dogs-not just as workers, but as lifelines for those in need.

A Trusted Partner in Pet Care

Purina's legacy in pet nutrition and welfare spans over 130 years. The company feeds 46 million dogs and 68 million cats annually in the U.S. and has invested over $150 million in causes that strengthen the bond between people and pets. With a team of nearly 500 scientists, veterinarians, and experts, Purina continues to innovate in pet wellness and support rural communities through partnerships like the Farm Dog of the Year contest.
