The U.S. cattle market regained bullish momentum on March 30, 2026, as traders and analysts observed stronger price action driven by steady cash cattle trade and resilient beef demand, a key development for the livestock industry as it looks toward a potential spring rally.

After trading lower or sideways for most of March, the cattle complex has finally turned upward, supported by firmer fundamentals and renewed confidence from market participants. Late last week marked a shift, as the fed cash cattle market held prices mostly steady, encouraging traders to push futures higher while boxed beef values began to stabilize.

Market tests key resistance as supply tightness emerges

A major signal of this recovery came when the June live cattle futures contract moved above its 40-day moving average and tested the $240 resistance level, a price not seen since October. By Monday's close, the contract reached $240.20, gaining $1.42 in a single session, reinforcing the market's upward trend.

Cash trade also provided a solid base, with Northern dressed cattle sales holding at $372, while Southern live cattle traded between $233 and $235, showing only slight declines. At the same time, boxed beef markets experienced unusual volatility, with select cuts briefly trading above choice cuts due to a shortage of grinding meat.

Processors responded by redirecting product flows, and although price relationships normalized by the end of the week, the episode highlighted tight supply conditions and strong underlying demand. Even with elevated beef prices compared to previous years, consumer demand remains robust, supporting the broader cattle complex.

Industry watches if current momentum can be sustained

Despite the challenges seen earlier in March, the market now shows renewed bullish sentiment and upward momentum heading into the new week. The combination of steady cash markets, technical strength in futures, and firm consumer demand provides a favorable backdrop.

Still, the key question remains whether this recovery will translate into a sustained spring rally. For now, the livestock sector remains cautiously optimistic, as time and market dynamics will ultimately determine the strength and duration of this upward trend.
