Pasture cattle are increasingly vulnerable to extreme summer heat, and producers should not assume grazing animals are naturally protected from dangerous weather conditions. That is the key message shared by Ben Beckman, forage systems educator with Nebraska Extension, in a recent UNL Beef Watch publication released on August 3. As hotter temperatures, elevated humidity, limited wind, and warmer nights become more frequent across the United States, livestock specialists warn that proactive pasture management is essential to protect herd health, maintain livestock productivity, and minimize economic losses for beef operations.
According to Beckman, water availability remains the first and most important defense against heat stress. Water consumption increases dramatically during heat waves, making it critical for producers to inspect tanks, pipelines, and flow capacity before extreme temperatures arrive. Clean water sources, adequate refill rates, and enough drinking space help prevent cattle from crowding around tanks, reducing additional heat buildup. Beckman also recommends positioning water sources separately from shade and preferred grazing areas to encourage animals to spread across the pasture instead of gathering in one location, which can increase stress and damage forage resources.
Although shade is essential during hot weather, Beckman cautions that poorly distributed shade can unintentionally worsen conditions by forcing cattle into tight groups where airflow is restricted. Natural tree cover offers valuable protection from direct sunlight, but producers should evaluate whether enough shaded areas exist to prevent overcrowding. Open pastures with stronger wind exposure allow cattle to dissipate body heat more efficiently, making pasture selection another valuable management tool during periods of extreme temperatures. Low-lying areas, dense tree cover, and sheltered draws often trap warm, humid air, increasing the likelihood of heat stress in grazing animals.
Another overlooked contributor to heat stress is fly pressure. According to Beckman, biting flies cause cattle to bunch together, stamp constantly, and remain standing for longer periods, all of which increase body temperature. While fly control alone cannot eliminate heat stress, it removes an important behavioral trigger that contributes to overheating. Producers are also encouraged to avoid handling, transporting, rotating, or processing cattle during the hottest hours of the day. Necessary movements should be scheduled during the early morning when temperatures are cooler, reducing physical exertion and limiting additional stress on already heat-challenged animals.
Beckman emphasizes that early identification of heat stress is one of the most effective ways to protect grazing cattle, since treatment options become increasingly limited once severe symptoms develop. Producers should closely monitor animals for open-mouth breathing, excessive panting, heavy salivation, restlessness, unusual bunching behavior, and cattle remaining clustered around water or shaded areas. These warning signs indicate that animals are struggling to regulate body temperature and require immediate management adjustments. As climate variability continues to challenge the U.S. livestock sector, implementing preventive practices such as improved water access, strategic shade placement, enhanced airflow, effective fly control, and careful handling schedules can strengthen herd resilience while supporting sustainable agriculture, reducing input costs, and preserving long-term beef production efficiency.
