The Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Program in Missouri reached historic levels this spring, as 602 bred heifers were sold for a total of $2,321,900 across five regional sales.

Over the course of nearly a year, these females underwent strict evaluation: pelvic measurements, reproductive tract scores, weight checks, and use of bulls with calving ease EPDs, whether through artificial insemination or natural service. The program uses science-based selection to raise reproductive standards and boost herd value.

Spring 2025 Sale Breakdown:

  • May 2, Fruitland: 85 heifers, average $3,745 each

  • May 9, Farmington: 153 heifers, average $3,689

  • May 16, Joplin/Carthage: 124 heifers at a record average of $4,010, totaling $497,240

  • May 17, Vienna: 58 heifers, average $3,917

  • June 7, Palmyra: 182 heifers, average $3,926

This year's total far exceeds past seasons. For instance, in 2018, the program sold 311 heifers for just under $494,000-making the 2025 outcome nearly double in both volume and price per head.

Market and Genetic Insights:
Reproductive specialist Thiago Martins from MU Extension emphasized that the record reflects producers' commitment to science-based genetic selection, which is pushing the bar higher for replacement heifers statewide and beyond.

Sale hosts noted that the program makes it easier to select "high-quality replacement heifers," offering value whether the buyer is retaining or selling.

Industry Implications:

  • Genetic quality: Drives higher demand and better calf outcomes

  • Profitability: Higher prices create strong returns per head

  • Reproductive management: Promotes standardized EPD selection and tract scoring

  • Replacement market: Helps close supply gaps amid tight cattle inventories

What's Next:

  1. Assess opportunities to scale the model in other states.

  2. Monitor the national price response to this record-setting sales cycle.

  3. Evaluate Tier Two heifer premiums and potential for broader market adoption.

For livestock professionals, this record underscores a pivotal trend: science-backed genetics and reproductive planning are commanding premium prices-and reshaping the future of U.S. cattle herds.
