Brazil's Agriculture Ministry confirmed that China has suspended five Brazilian soy exporters after detecting pesticide-treated wheat residues in a 69,000-ton shipment that attempted to enter Chinese ports. The move, formally communicated to Brasília, marks another point of friction in global agricultural trade, amid heightened sanitary scrutiny and geopolitical pressures.

The ministry noted that the measure applies to "five facilities among more than 2,000 authorized to export soybeans to China," adding that the incident "is being treated as a top priority." While no names were disclosed, Brazilian newspaper Folha de S. Paulo reported that the suspension involves plants operated by Cargill, Louis Dreyfus, CHS Agronegocio, and 3Tentos.

According to Folha's investigation, the affected cargo was rejected after authorities identified cross-contamination with wheat stored in the same hold, prompting China to block the companies involved. Cargill, Louis Dreyfus, and CHS Agronegocio did not respond to media requests for comment, while 3Tentos declined to comment.

Despite the setback, the Agriculture Ministry emphasized that Brazil maintains "a solid and strategic relationship with China," recalling that the Asian nation remains its largest agricultural trading partner, with soybean exports expected to exceed 100 million tons this year. "When notified of any potential non-compliance, the Brazilian government acts with transparency, responsibility, and agility," the ministry said.

The suspension comes as China tightens sanitary and environmental standards on agricultural imports, while Latin America seeks to strengthen its role in global value chains in an increasingly competitive market.
