The USDA reported on June 9, 2026, that the period from August 2025 through May 2026 was the driest such stretch in the continental United States since 1976-77. The findings, highlighted in the agency's Weekly Weather and Crop Bulletin, show that farmers across the country faced exceptional drought and record-breaking heat, a combination that matters because it threatens crop yields, livestock production, farm income and food affordability.

According to the USDA analysis, the continental United States received an average of just 20.78 inches of precipitation between August 2025 and May 2026, far below the 20th-century average of 24.23 inches.

The period ranks as the sixth driest August-to-May stretch ever recorded and the driest since the 1976-77 agricultural drought, which remains one of the most challenging weather events in modern U.S. farming history. What makes the data even more remarkable is that near-normal rainfall during May was not enough to offset the severe moisture deficits that had accumulated over the previous nine months.

Drought Coverage Expanded Across Most of the Country

The prolonged dryness significantly expanded drought conditions nationwide. USDA researchers noted that drought affected more than 60% of the contiguous United States every week from April 7 through May 26, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Large portions of the Plains, Midwest and Western states experienced persistent moisture shortages that reduced soil reserves, stressed crops and increased irrigation demands. The combination of extreme heat and limited rainfall accelerated soil moisture depletion, increased crop stress and heightened wildfire danger across multiple agricultural regions.

Lower yields can tighten grain supplies, increase commodity prices and raise production costs for livestock producers who depend on feed crops. At the consumer level, weather-related production losses frequently contribute to higher food prices and additional inflationary pressure. Agricultural economists note that the combination of drought, extreme heat and elevated production costs creates one of the most challenging operating environments farmers have faced in years.

Although recent rainfall has provided some relief in parts of the country, the USDA data underscore the severity of the moisture deficit that accumulated during the past 10 months. The historic drought serves as a reminder that weather remains one of the most powerful forces shaping agricultural productivity, commodity markets and rural economies.
