After two weeks of widespread rainfall brought major relief to drought-stricken areas across the Southeast and portions of the southern Midwest, weather models are now signaling a notable shift. The emerging pattern favors warmer temperatures, limited precipitation and declining soil moisture, creating fresh uncertainty for farmers entering the heart of the growing season.
Recent storms delivered substantial rainfall across much of the Southeast, with some areas receiving one to two months' worth of precipitation in less than two weeks. Those rains significantly improved topsoil moisture and reduced drought intensity, offering much-needed support for row crops and pasture conditions.
However, meteorologists caution that while surface moisture has improved, subsoil moisture deficits remain a concern, meaning crops will continue to depend on additional rainfall in the coming weeks.
Conditions are becoming increasingly concerning across parts of the Midwest where rainfall has been closer to seasonal averages and less abundant than farther south.
According to the latest drought monitoring data, areas of abnormal dryness have expanded across Minnesota, Wisconsin, northern Illinois and Iowa, regions that play a critical role in U.S. corn and soybean production.

The larger concern is that the upper-level ridge is expected to rebuild during the second week of June, extending the period of below-normal rainfall. If current forecasts verify, much of the Midwest and Southeast could experience two consecutive weeks of drying conditions, accelerating moisture loss and increasing crop stress.
Higher temperatures combined with limited rainfall create a particularly challenging environment for young crops, which are entering important vegetative growth stages that help determine yield potential later in the season.
Weather analysts note that the current setup bears some resemblance to conditions observed during late spring and early summer of 2023, when a strong El Niño pattern contributed to expanding drought concerns across the Corn Belt.
During that season, dry and hot weather fueled fears of significant yield losses and prompted comparisons to the historic 2012 drought. Ultimately, widespread rains arrived later in the summer and stabilized crop conditions.
While forecasters stress that 2026 is not expected to follow the exact same path, the comparison highlights how rapidly weather conditions can influence crop prospects and market sentiment.
Despite growing concerns about short-term dryness, long-range weather models continue to indicate a potential pattern shift during the second half of June and into early July.
Forecasts suggest the dominant ridge may weaken or retreat westward, allowing more storm systems to move across the Corn Belt and Southeast. Such a transition would improve rainfall opportunities and help stabilize soil moisture levels.
The location of the ridge will remain critical. If it lingers over the Plains, portions of the Western Corn Belt could face a renewed risk of drought expansion. However, broader seasonal forecasts associated with El Niño continue to favor generally favorable moisture conditions across much of the region east of the Rocky Mountains.
