Record Heat and Drought Threaten U.S. Crops as Extreme Weather Expands

The United States agricultural sector is facing a new wave of weather-related challenges this week as record-breaking heat, expanding dry conditions, and localized flooding concerns impact several of the country's most productive farming areas. According to the USDA's latest Agricultural Weather Highlights released on July 13, 2026, temperatures above 100°F have spread across the Plains and Upper Midwest, while rainfall patterns remain highly uneven. The situation matters because weather conditions during July are critical for determining corn and soybean yields, spring wheat development, livestock performance, and overall commodity price trends in the second half of the year.

The most alarming conditions are unfolding across the Northern Plains and parts of the Intermountain West, where all-time temperature records were shattered over the weekend. Montana cities including Miles City reached 115°F, while Billings climbed to 111°F. Similar records were also established in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Idaho Falls, Idaho. USDA meteorologists warn that these extreme temperatures could negatively affect spring wheat and barley during critical grain-fill stages, potentially reducing final yields and increasing market volatility for grain supplies. At the same time, prolonged heat raises concerns over livestock stress, water demand, and higher production costs for ranchers.

Across the Corn Belt, temperatures between 90°F and 100°F are accelerating corn and soybean development, particularly in the Upper Midwest. While warm and dry weather may initially support field conditions, prolonged heat combined with limited precipitation could begin to erode yield potential if moisture deficits intensify during pollination. In contrast, southern states continue to experience persistent rainfall, with parts of Texas potentially receiving more than five inches of additional precipitation. Although the rain is limiting fieldwork and delaying some agricultural operations, it is also providing much-needed drought relief in portions of the Southeast and Atlantic Coast states.

USDA's outlook indicates that little or no rainfall is expected during the next five days across a large corridor extending from the Dakotas and Kansas into much of the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic region. Above-normal temperatures are expected to persist, increasing concerns about crop stress during one of the most sensitive periods of the growing season. Longer-term forecasts for July 18-22 suggest hotter-than-normal conditions across much of the country, while near- or above-average rainfall is anticipated nationwide, particularly in western states where monsoon activity could help reduce wildfire threats. The evolving weather pattern will remain a key variable for commodity markets, crop insurance considerations, and farm management decisions in the weeks ahead.
