Relentless June Rains Slash Drought but Raise New Risks for America's Corn Belt
Exceptional June rainfall erased drought across much of the Corn Belt, boosted soil moisture, and improved crop prospects, but widespread flooding and severe storms created new risks for U.S. agriculture.
An unusually wet weather pattern throughout June 2026 delivered above-average rainfall across much of the Plains, Midwest, South, and Southeast, dramatically improving soil moisture and reducing drought conditions just as corn enters its most critical stage of development. Throughout the month, repeated storm systems and the remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur produced widespread rainfall, flooding, and severe weather that reshaped growing conditions across major agricultural regions. The shift matters because it could significantly influence corn and soybean yields, commodity markets, crop insurance claims, and farm profitability during the remainder of the growing season.
The rainfall was exceptional across dozens of agricultural communities, with many locations receiving nearly double-or even more than twice-their normal June precipitation. Cities including Wichita, Lexington, Evansville, Quincy, Louisville, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Peoria all recorded rainfall exceeding 200% of their historical June averages. This moisture replenished depleted soils, restored subsoil reserves, and eliminated drought across many producing regions that entered the month under moisture stress. Improved field conditions now provide a stronger foundation for crop development heading into pollination, widely considered the most yield-sensitive period for U.S. corn production.

While the abundant rainfall greatly benefited crop development, it also brought significant challenges. Flash flooding affected numerous agricultural communities, and repeated rounds of severe thunderstorms produced damaging straight-line winds, large hail, and dozens of tornadoes across the Central Plains and Midwest. Several powerful storm outbreaks caused injuries, fatalities, and extensive infrastructure damage, while high winds flattened crops in localized areas. Agronomists note that although improved moisture generally favors higher yields, excessive rainfall can delay field operations, increase disease pressure, and create uneven crop stands in poorly drained fields.
Not every production region shared in the favorable moisture. Portions of the Upper Midwest, western and central Texas, southeastern South Dakota, northwestern Iowa, and southern Minnesota continued to experience below-normal precipitation, allowing drought conditions to persist or even expand. Even so, the broader national picture entering July remains considerably stronger than just one month ago. With healthier soil moisture reserves supporting much of the Corn Belt, U.S. agriculture enters the heart of the growing season in a stronger position, although producers will continue monitoring flood recovery, disease development, and the next wave of summer weather that will ultimately determine final crop yields and commodity prices.
