Weather Whiplash Hits U.S. Farms as Drought, Floods and Frost Threaten Profits

U.S. farmers are facing a dramatic weather divide this week as drought, flooding, frost and rising temperatures simultaneously impact key agricultural regions. According to USDA's Agricultural Weather Highlights released on May 21, 2026, producers across the Plains, Corn Belt and South are confronting weather-related risks that could affect crop yields, livestock operations and commodity markets heading into the summer growing season.

The latest report underscores the growing challenge of managing agricultural production amid increasingly volatile weather patterns. While rainfall has improved soil moisture in some drought-stricken regions, other areas are dealing with excessive precipitation, delayed fieldwork and renewed concerns about crop quality.

Drought Continues to Devastate Wheat Production Across the Plains

The central and southern Plains remain one of the most concerning areas for U.S. agriculture despite recent scattered rainfall. USDA meteorologists noted that showers and below-normal temperatures have temporarily improved topsoil moisture and reduced wildfire risks, but for many wheat growers, the relief arrived too late.

Nebraska currently leads the nation in winter wheat deterioration, with 84% of the crop rated poor to very poor, highlighting the severity of drought impacts across the region. Other major wheat-producing states are also struggling, including Texas at 65%, Kansas at 58%, Colorado at 58% and Oklahoma at 48%.

The poor crop ratings raise concerns about national wheat production, grain supplies and commodity prices during the second half of 2026. Producers throughout the region continue to evaluate crop insurance options while monitoring rainfall forecasts that may influence final yield potential.

While drought dominates headlines in the Plains, farmers elsewhere face a very different set of weather threats.

In the Corn Belt, frost and freeze advisories extended across portions of the Upper Great Lakes region, reaching as far south as northern Lower Michigan. The cold snap poses risks to blooming fruit crops and specialty agriculture operations at a critical stage of development.

Meanwhile, recent heavy rainfall has delayed fieldwork across parts of the lower Midwest. Southern Indiana recorded between 3 and 6 inches of rain in recent days, leaving producers waiting for fields to dry before resuming planting and crop management activities.

Further south, excessive moisture remains a concern in Texas, where localized flooding continues in coastal and southern portions of the state. Ongoing downpours have complicated farming operations and increased uncertainty for producers already managing seasonal planting schedules.

At the same time, persistent heat is intensifying stress in drought-affected Atlantic Coast states from the Carolinas southward. The combination of elevated temperatures and limited rainfall is reducing pasture quality and increasing pressure on rain-fed summer crops.

Weather forecasters expect active conditions to continue through Memorial Day weekend across much of the central and eastern United States. The heaviest rainfall is forecast from the western Gulf Coast through the Ohio Valley, with widespread totals of 2 to 6 inches or more possible in some locations.

The storm system is also expected to generate localized severe thunderstorms across portions of the central and southern Plains, potentially creating additional risks for crops and rural infrastructure. However, not all regions will benefit from the moisture. Forecast models indicate that parts of the lower Southeast and upper Midwest may receive little rainfall during the upcoming weather pattern.

Meanwhile, dry weather is expected to dominate areas west of the Rocky Mountains, where temperatures continue to climb. The warming trend developing along the Pacific Coast is forecast to spread eastward into the Plains during the latter portion of the holiday weekend.

By Memorial Day, temperatures are expected to exceed 90°F as far north as the Dakotas and eastern Montana, signaling an early-season heat wave that could accelerate crop development and increase water demand.

The National Weather Service's 6-to-10-day outlook suggests that warmer-than-normal conditions will prevail across much of the country from the Plains to the Atlantic Coast, while much of the West may experience near- or below-normal temperatures. Forecasters also anticipate near- to above-normal precipitation across most agricultural regions, except for drier-than-normal conditions expected from the Great Lakes into the Northeast.

For producers, the outlook reinforces the importance of weather risk management strategies, including crop insurance, irrigation planning and ongoing field monitoring. As planting and early crop development continue, weather conditions over the next several weeks will play a critical role in determining yield potential for corn, soybeans, wheat and forage crops.

The combination of drought losses, flooding risks, frost damage and expanding heat stress is creating significant uncertainty for U.S. agriculture. Production costs, irrigation demand, crop insurance claims and yield variability could all influence farm profitability during the 2026 growing season.

For grain markets, livestock producers and agribusinesses, weather remains the single most important variable to watch. Whether rainfall arrives where it is needed-and avoids areas already saturated-may ultimately determine the economic outcome of this year's crop season.
