Wildfires, Heat and Timely Rains Create a High-Stakes Week for U.S. Farmers
USDA says shifting weather patterns are bringing relief to some crops while intensifying wildfire risks and heat across key U.S. farming regions.
The USDA's World Agricultural Outlook Board released its latest Agricultural Weather Highlights on August 5, 2026, showing a sharply divided weather pattern across the United States. While cooler temperatures and widespread rainfall are improving conditions for corn and soybean crops in the Midwest, expanding heat, drought and worsening wildfire risks continue threatening producers across the West and Southern Plains. The report is significant because weather conditions during August play a critical role in determining crop yields, commodity prices, crop insurance claims and harvest expectations for the 2026 growing season.

Across the Western United States, forecasters report that the North American monsoon is beginning to strengthen, although meaningful rainfall has yet to arrive from northwestern Mexico. Extreme heat is expanding across much of the region, while cooler air remains limited to the northern Rockies. At the same time, dense wildfire smoke continues affecting air quality throughout the Pacific Northwest, where active fires remain a major concern. USDA warns that rising temperatures, falling humidity and stronger winds later this week could significantly increase fire activity, allowing existing fires to spread rapidly while creating favorable conditions for new wildfire outbreaks across the Northwest and northern High Plains.
Cooler Temperatures Offer Relief Across Key Crop-Producing States
The Central and Northern Plains are experiencing a welcome break from the intense summer heat. Cooler air has pushed south into Kansas, accompanied by scattered showers that are providing much-needed relief for immature corn, soybeans and other summer crops that had been stressed by prolonged heat and dry conditions. However, moisture deficits remain severe in several areas. USDA data collected on August 2 showed topsoil moisture rated very short to short on 54% of Kansas farmland and an alarming 87% across Colorado, underscoring how recent rainfall is only beginning to improve crop prospects. Meanwhile, hot and dry weather continues across Oklahoma and Texas, where producers remain concerned about yield potential.
Conditions are also improving across the Corn Belt, where a cold front stretching southwest from the Great Lakes is producing showers and thunderstorms while separating cooler air in the Upper Midwest from warm, humid conditions farther east. Recent rainfall combined with near- or below-normal temperatures has benefited corn and soybean development during one of the most important stages of the growing season. In the South, warmer-than-normal temperatures continue accelerating crop development, although excessive heat persists from the western Gulf Coast through the Mississippi Delta. Across the Southeast, repeated showers and humid conditions are gradually easing drought impacts that have affected portions of the southern Atlantic states.
USDA Sees More Rain Ahead but Warns of Nationwide Heat Next Week
Looking ahead, USDA meteorologists expect the North American monsoon to become fully re-established during the weekend, bringing expanding showers to the Four Corners region and neighboring states. Additional rainfall totaling 1 to 2 inches is forecast across much of the central and eastern Corn Belt, with similar precipitation expected throughout much of the eastern United States. Thunderstorms could locally produce even higher rainfall totals, improving soil moisture and supporting late-season crop development.
Despite the near-term benefits, the longer-range outlook suggests producers should prepare for another shift. According to the National Weather Service's 6-to-10-day forecast for August 10-14, hotter-than-normal temperatures are expected across nearly the entire country, with only areas along the Canadian border likely to experience near-normal conditions. Most regions are also forecast to receive near- or above-average rainfall, while Florida's peninsula is expected to remain drier than normal. For U.S. agriculture, the combination of improving moisture, persistent heat and elevated wildfire danger means weather will remain one of the biggest drivers of crop yields, livestock conditions, input costs and commodity market volatility as the growing season enters its final stretch.
