USDA Warns of Extreme Heat, Severe Storms and Growing Weather Risks Across U.S.
Heat waves, severe storms and shifting rainfall patterns are impacting crops and livestock as USDA warns of elevated weather threats nationwide.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported on June 12 that extreme heat, severe thunderstorms and uneven rainfall patterns are affecting major agricultural regions across the country, creating new challenges for crop development, livestock management and farm operations. The latest outlook matters because weather conditions during June play a critical role in determining yields, pasture health and overall production potential for the 2026 growing season.
According to USDA's Agricultural Weather Highlights, temperatures continue to climb across the western United States, particularly in the Pacific Coast states. Forecasters expect temperatures to reach 105°F or higher in California's Sacramento Valley, while large portions of the central Rockies and Intermountain West remain under an elevated wildfire threat. Such conditions increase stress on crops, livestock and water resources while raising concerns about irrigation demands and input costs for producers.

In the Plains, conditions have shifted notably from the intense heat experienced earlier this season. Near- or below-normal temperatures have replaced previous hot weather, although scattered thunderstorms continue across portions of the southeastern Plains. Despite recent rainfall improvements, soil moisture remains a concern. USDA reported that topsoil moisture was still rated at least 30% very short to short in every Plains state, with Colorado facing the most severe situation at 87% very short to short.
The Corn Belt experienced one of the most significant weather events of the week. Hundreds of reports of wind damage were recorded across Illinois and Indiana following a severe weather outbreak, affecting some of the nation's most productive corn and soybean areas. While cooler and drier air has since moved into much of the Midwest, helping stabilize field conditions, the damage highlights the vulnerability of crops during critical growth stages. USDA noted that most summer crops across the region still have adequate moisture for development.
In the South, producers continue to contend with a combination of heat, humidity and severe weather risks. High temperatures are forecast to reach 100°F in parts of Virginia and the Carolinas, while thunderstorms are expected across portions of the Southeast and Mid-South. At the same time, drought remains a major issue for pasture conditions. USDA reported that more than 50% of pastures in Virginia and North Carolina were rated very poor to poor as of June 7, creating challenges for livestock producers dependent on forage availability.
Looking ahead, meteorologists expect a cold front stretching from the Great Lakes to the southern Plains to move eastward, triggering additional severe thunderstorms across portions of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Rainfall totals over the next five days could range from 1 to 5 inches across the South, with the heaviest precipitation expected from eastern Texas through Georgia. Such rainfall could improve soil moisture levels in some drought-affected areas while potentially delaying fieldwork in others.
Meanwhile, much of the northern and central Plains and parts of the Midwest are expected to remain relatively dry, aside from isolated weekend showers. In contrast, hot and dry conditions will continue west of the Rockies, with temperatures frequently exceeding 110°F in lower elevations of the Desert Southwest. These conditions may increase stress on specialty crops, grazing lands and water supplies.
The USDA also highlighted its 6-to-10-day outlook, which calls for near- or above-normal temperatures across most of the United States, with the exception of portions of the Midwest and Northeast where cooler conditions are more likely. Florida, the Great Basin and the Southwest are expected to face the highest probability of above-normal heat. Rainfall forecasts generally favor near- or above-normal precipitation across much of the country, while parts of the Pacific Northwest are expected to remain drier than average.
For agricultural producers, the evolving weather pattern reinforces the importance of closely monitoring crop conditions, irrigation requirements, livestock stress levels and risk-management strategies. With commodity markets increasingly sensitive to weather developments during the growing season, the coming weeks could have significant implications for production forecasts, supply chains and farm profitability across the United States.
