GDM acquires AgReliant: Argentine giant rises to global top 4 in corn genetics

In a landmark move, Argentina's GDM has announced the full acquisition of AgReliant Genetics, one of the most prominent seed companies in the United States. This transaction-pending regulatory approval-will position GDM as the fourth-largest global provider of corn genetics, consolidating its existing leadership in soybeans. A strategic leap with deep implications for global agribusiness.

In a strategic acquisition that reshapes the global seed market, GDM, the Argentine agribusiness powerhouse behind the DONMARIO brand, announced the purchase of 100% of AgReliant Genetics, a key player in North American seed technology. The deal, expected to close in Q3 2025 pending regulatory approvals, propels GDM into the top four global providers of corn genetics, while reinforcing its dominance in soybean innovation.

"We are thrilled to announce the acquisition of AgReliant Genetics, a leading U.S. seed company known for its excellence in corn breeding and its strong relationships with growers and distributors across North America," GDM stated in its official release.

AgReliant: A North American Corn Powerhouse

Headquartered in Westfield, Indiana, AgReliant Genetics was founded in 2000 as a joint venture between European firms KWS and Limagrain (via Vilmorin & Cie). It has become a key seed supplier for the U.S. and Canadian markets, operating under major regional brands such as AgriGold, LG Seeds, and PRIDE Seeds.

AgReliant boasts one of the largest temperate corn germplasm banks in the hemisphere and ranks among the top four corn R&D programs worldwide. GDM's acquisition includes full rights to this germplasm, which it aims to integrate with its existing operations and brands-Mustang Seeds, Revere, and DONMARIO.

A Strategic Leap for GDM in North America

"This acquisition is a significant milestone for both companies and a major step forward in GDM's North American growth strategy," said Ignacio Bartolomé, CEO of GDM. "It will allow us to offer growers a broader, high-performance portfolio and create new opportunities to accelerate innovation and business growth in both corn and soybean genetics."

The deal is seen as a win-win for both teams and customers. Bartolomé emphasized that combining AgReliant's deep local knowledge with GDM's global innovation engine will result in more competitive and diverse seed solutions for the North American market.

Leadership Continuity and Operational Synergy

Post-acquisition, Brian Barker, AgReliant's current CEO, will lead GDM's North American operations, with Philip Chandler continuing his role overseeing U.S. operations. "North American growers will benefit significantly from AgReliant's integration into GDM," Barker said. "Together, we're building a stronger, more integrated seed portfolio that brings greater value to our customers."

Until the deal closes, both companies will continue to operate independently, with no changes to their current commercial structures.

A Game-Changer for Argentine Ag-Tech on the Global Stage

From the seller's side, Vilmorin & Cie highlighted the transaction's strategic value. "This marks an important milestone for Vilmorin & Cie, allowing us to sharpen our focus on key regions in line with our Ambition 2030 roadmap," they stated, noting that they will retain access to the jointly developed corn germplasm with KWS.

Advised by MAP LATAM and Rabobank, the acquisition cements GDM's rise as a global seed technology leader, with the ability to compete in the most demanding agricultural markets. It is also a powerful example of how Argentine innovation can scale globally, driving value through research, partnerships, and loterm vision.
