In Wappingers Falls, New York, Tony Scott, a semiconductor engineer turned grower, stands beside his latest marvel - a 1,931-pound pumpkin, nearly the weight of a compact vehicle. For months, he has monitored its growth like a research project: measuring girth, feeding customized fertilizer blends, and protecting it with tarps and blankets to regulate temperature.

Gravity plays a major role in shaping these giants. Unlike smaller pumpkins that grow upright, the colossal fruits spread horizontally, their sheer weight preventing vertical expansion. Beyond hydration and sunlight, growers employ creative defenses to protect their patch. Reflective panels deter deer, while fake predator cutouts keep rodents and woodchucks at bay. "You'd be surprised what will try to take a bite out of a 1,900-pound pumpkin," Scott joked.
But even the biggest pumpkins have their limits. "Can they grow forever? The answer is no," said Borsuk. Once the fruit matures, its cell growth slows and natural aging sets in. The challenge, she said, lies in maximizing the growth phase before maturity halts expansion.
Scott has spent eight years perfecting his technique, and each season brings new insights into plant metabolism and environmental control. After the weigh-offs, he displays his pumpkins at fairs and parades before donating them for community events or carving showcases.
On the road, the attention is inevitable. "People always stop and ask if it's real," Scott said. "Where would you even buy a fake pumpkin this big?"
