Sustainable Dairy Innovations at Ayers Farm
Ayers Farm finds sustainability in every scoop. An Ohio dairy turns Budweiser byproducts into smart, eco-friendly cow feed.
At Ayers Farm in Perryville, Ohio, sustainability isn't a buzzword - it's a way of life. Home to more than 600 Holstein cows, the farm has found an innovative partner in the Budweiser plant in Columbus, using brewer's mash, a byproduct of beer production, as a feed ingredient. This creative solution is not just environmentally responsible - it's economically smart.
Recycling for Results
Kathy Davis, a seventh-generation dairy farmer, explains that the use of distillers grains has been part of the farm's operations since the late 1980s. "Farmers are the ultimate recyclers," Davis says. The cows' diet is a thoughtful mix that includes corn gluten, soybean meal, cottonseed, and other byproducts sourced from regional food processors.
"Before distillers grains, we used potato waste from a nearby Frito Lay plant," Davis recalls. "We're always looking for nutritional and cost-effective benefits, and the distiller grain fits both." The nutritional plan is developed with their herd nutritionist, who ensures the mix meets the cows' needs while reducing waste from other industries.

Tech-Powered Dairy
Innovation doesn't stop at feed. Ayers Farm integrates precision dairy technology to monitor and support herd health. GEA activity monitors track behavior in breediage heifers and lactating cows, while DeLaval cameras in maternity pens offer real-time insights to aid in calving and care. These tools allow the team to spot issues early and improve animal well-being.
"It's about more than milk production," Davis says. "It's about having the right people - nutritionists, vets, employees - and tech to create a balanced, sustainable farm life."
The farm employs 25 people, operates 1,500 acres, and supports an equal number of replacement heifers alongside its milking herd. Owner-operators and staff work collaboratively to maintain a high standard of care and efficiency.
Facing Challenges, Planning Ahead
Like many U.S. dairies, labor shortages and milk hauling logistics remain persistent challenges for Ayers Farm. To adapt, they are exploring beef-on-dairy breeding strategies to enhance profitability and maximize calf value.
Succession planning is also front of mind. Davis and her cousin are increasingly taking over operational roles as their father and uncle approach retirement. "Passing the baton requires more than just asset transfer; it's about passing on the management mindset too," Davis notes.
A Future Built on Heritage and Innovation
Ayers Farm is a prime example of how traditional values can blend with modern solutions. By turning brewery waste into high-value dairy nutrition, implementing precision ag tools, and planning for generational transition, the farm continues to grow while reducing its footprint.
In the ever-changing dairy landscape, Ayers Farm shows that sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand - especially when you turn a beer byproduct into bovine fuel.
