The American Seed Trade Association and CropLife America have officially released an updated Guide to Seed Treatment Stewardship, a comprehensive educational resource developed in collaboration with the Agricultural Retailers Association, the American Farm Bureau Federation, the American Soybean Association, the National Corn Growers Association, and the National Cotton Council. This guide is designed to promote the responsible and effective use of treated seeds across the U.S. agricultural landscape.

Seed treatments are a critical part of modern farming, providing a targeted and cost-effective way to protect seeds during germination from early-season pests and diseases. Used widely since the 1980s, these technologies are credited with contributing to higher crop yields, improved seedling vigor, and reduced environmental impact compared to conventional broad-spectrum applications.

The performance gains from treated seed are substantial. Field data shows yield increases of 3.6% in soybeans and up to 71.3% in potatoes, offering a compelling economic case for their continued use.

"As today's farmers face evolving challenges in the field and the economy, we must ensure they have every tool in the toolbox available," said Andy LaVigne, President and CEO of the American Seed Trade Association. "We are proud to provide farmers, retailers, and applicators with resources that support the safe handling, planting, and management of treated seed."

The updated guide outlines key stewardship principles, including proper storage, transport, and disposal of treated seeds, along with best practices for minimizing off-target exposure to pollinators, wildlife, and waterways. It also emphasizes the importance of following label instructions, maintaining clean planting equipment, and communicating with local stakeholders during planting seasons.

Alexandra Dunn, President and CEO of CropLife America

"Seed treatments continue to be an innovative solution for protecting crops because they incorporate the precise application of pesticides and provide numerous environmental and economic benefits for farmers," said Alexandra Dunn, President and CEO of CropLife America. "CLA is proud to sponsor this guide and remains committed to supporting and educating farmers with the information they need to use treated seeds effectively and efficiently."

As the U.S. agriculture sector faces increasing scrutiny over pesticide use, runoff, and pollinator health, stewardship of seed treatment technologies remains critical to maintaining public trust and regulatory flexibility. The updated guide reinforces industry commitments to sustainable agriculture and positions seed treatment as a vital tool for supporting both crop productivity and environmental responsibility.

The guide is now available at seed-treatment-guide.com, providing timely and science-based information for growers, co-ops, agronomists, and ag retailers across the country.
